RACE RESULT-The Krabi Adventure Race Trophy 2016
KRABI ADVENTURE RACE TROPHY 2016
by AMA Events Saturday November 05th, Klang Muang, Krabi
What a race ! A fantastic turnout for the third Krabi Adventure Trophy taking place on the weekend, against all odds from mother nature (with the year’s heaviest rainfall in the week leading up!). Organisers and racers alike were worried – but as luck would have it the sun shone all day to see the last racers across the line. Another seamless AMA Adventure Race event rolled out to the delight of all participants with most experienced adventure racers commenting it was the toughest race to date, due to the muddy conditions.
…and the course was muddy to say the least, particularly the first 6km mostly single trail bike leg saw a lot of slip and sliding moments testing even the experienced MTB’s leading the way (which yours truly can attest to, having a muddy ‘over the bars’ face plant downhill with no traction!). But it’s hard to argue that the views were stunning as the ride climbed into the hilltops of Krabi, it was hard not to stop and take in the countless islands towering out of the crystal blue South Andaman Sea. But the best views were still yet to come for the Adventure racers.
As the first bike leg came to an end (to the relief of many) arriving to the beach transition and refreshing ocean swim giving racers a well needed bath and cool off before the first run… a beach run. But unlike the soft sand beach run at XTERRA SAMUI last month, the tide was out and with firm sand underfoot, racers kept a good pace before diving into the jungle trails, greeted with the relief from the sun, under the cooling shade of the canopy. Experienced trail runners truly discovered the meaning of an ‘Adventure Race Trail Run’, negotiating numerous streams, rocky elevations, tight winding bamboo forests, some razor sharp grass and the occasional fallen tree to contort themselves under to squeeze past!
After a 4km run the most memorable part of the Krabi Adventure race was afoot – the 6km Kayak for Adventure races and 8km for Extreme – and WOW words can’t describe such an incredible experience – after approximately 2kms of open water paddling, racers entered a hidden cove with towering cliff walls. The silence and protected waters had an eerie calm at first, then the soft sound of nature, bird calls and monkey’s could be heard all along the way through the mangroves. Make sure you don’t miss the video and gallery to to relive the moment!
Kayakers paddled back with a slight current and head wind, but conditions overall were ideal. Pulling up the boats to the shore and refreshing water supplies for the final stages of the adventure race. After a short road run followed by a half km lagoon swim, racers sensed the finish line wasn’t far off and the toughest challenges behind them – that was until through the trees a menacing, steep, tree rooted muddy trail revealed itself towering over head. After clambering up the slippery path, clutching onto tree roots at times for dear life, you could say most people’s legs were ‘truly pumped’. Following was a thick forested undulating run opening to a rock cropped uphill leg which after another quick descent racers recognised the familiar course returning to the beach across the now welcomed streams for a quick cool down. The beach run with a now high tide, beckoned at racers to get wet one last time wading through the estuary pass, humouring the onlooking tourists bathing at their beach side resorts!
The home stretch was afoot, a reverse MTB trail for Extreme racers up the earlier elevations and quick descents before joining adventure racers on the road back to Klang Muang beach. With one last surprise and final thank you to racers from the AMA team, with a quick right turn off the sealed roads, riders were treated to a final ride 3-4km ride down the beautiful calm beaches to the finish, which was more of a delight than anything else. A fun little estuary crossing catching out some riders with the incoming shore breakers, overcome quickly with the flags and finish line in site. Dismounted, the finish arch with only a few steps away, no team or solo racer crossed the line without a grin from ear to ear on their faces – possibly that’s the only way to sum up the event overall, big smiles!
The fastest finishers were a little over 3 hours and others over 7 hours – battling muddy trails, strong sun, challenging rides – whether it was a first time achievement or returning for yet another adventure run; everyone reached deep within themselves to come across the finish completely elated ! That is the spirit of Adventure Racing – and why would we ever want to do anything else !
Congratulations to all racers for finishing, and our top finishers just over 3 hours for solo led by Manop Suwannachit and in the teams North Face Extreme Team in 4 hours 19 mins – Jantaraboon Kiangchaipaiphana and Saman Gunan whilst the Adventure Team leaders ชัยณรงค์ เริงสมุทร์ and ชัยวัฒน์ เกกินะ finishing in exactly 4hrs!

As always a special thanks to the AMA Events team that makes all of this happen, in a safe and controlled environment. Also for putting on a great after party and awards ceremony at Paka Live Show, Krabi.
